National Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration & Flag Raising
The month of June is a time to celebrate the rich histories, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous peoples, while also recognizing the importance of truth, respect, and reconciliation. The DEIA Team will be hosting a celebration event on June 17 from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at the Flato Markham Theatre. The event will
feature Juno Award nominee and Billboard-charting band Sultans of String, accompanied by an Indigenous dancer, as well as Indigenous Elders Kate Dickson and Shannon Thunderbird. Together, they will guide us in honoring, celebrating, and learning about Indigenous traditions and culture. To close off this celebration, we will make our way to the temporary flag poles in the amphitheatre for a flag-raising ceremony. Join us to show your support, connect with others, and take part in a fun and inclusive celebration. We look forward to seeing you there.
Sultans of String and Walking Through the Fire
Walking Through the Fire is a profoundly collaborative album and touring project created in direct response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 Calls to Action, featuring Indigenous Collaborations with the award-winning roots ensemble Sultans of String. Together they feature a rich tapestry of First Nations, Métis and Inuit voices - from artists such as Alyssa Katrine, Marc Meriläinen, Shannon Thunderbird, and dancer Robin Rice - with Sultans of String's global-roots sound, the project seeks to “walk through the fire” of historical trauma, truth-telling and intergenerational impact. The project sets a new standard for respectful and equitable non-Indigenous/Indigenous artistic alliances.
