Sustainable Neighbourhood Retrofit Action Plan

What is a SNAP?

The City of Markham, in partnership with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) are leading the development of a unique and exciting Sustainable Neighbourhood Retrofit Action Plan (SNAP). The SNAP is a pilot project that aims to accelerate the implementation of sustainable practices to prepare for climate change.

Bayview Glen Neighbourhood

BayView Glen Area MapBayview Glen is a beautiful and mature neighbourhood located within the community of Thornhill in the City of Markham and is the home of 2100 residents. With plenty of community amenities such as parks and parkettes, Bayview Glen Public School, and commercial areas, it presents an excellent opportunity to implement community retrofits to strengthen the community.

The Bayview Glen neighbourhood has been selected for SNAP because of the flood remediation and control work planned in 2015 as a result of being the focus of the West Thornhill Flood Control Implementation Alternative Refinement Study and York Region's Inflow and Infiltration Reduction Strategy. In addition to improving stormwater management and reducing residential flooding, the Bayview Glen SNAP action-oriented approach addresses several Greenprint Priorities. Specifically, the Bayview Glen SNAP will:

  • Offer a timely opportunity to address retrofit objectives and thereby advance implementation of the Don Watershed Regeneration Plan.
  • Contribute to Greenprint Energy and Climate [PDF] priorities through reduction of carbon emissions and other greenhouse gases.
  • Address the long term sustainability of drinking water through fresh water conservation.
  • Reinvigorate parks and parkettes and increase urban forestry and biodiversity.
  • Generate financial savings and benefits through energy conservation.

Through these strategic initiatives, the Bayview Glen SNAP aims to improve the aspects of your neighbourhood that you love and create a healthier, greener, and more livable future for the Bayview Glen neighbourhood.
