York Region District School Board and Markham Museum have received two awards for this joint exhibition highlighting the history of Chinese immigration to York Region, Chinese culture and the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act.
Standing In the Doorway: Lived Histories and Experiences of the Chinese Community has received the 2024 Canadian Museum Association’s (CMA) prestigious Outstanding Achievement, Audience Outreach award. This award recognizes programming that goes above and beyond in delivering knowledge to a new audience while enhancing the connection the existing ones. Without the help of the community and over 500 members of the Chinese community throughout the York Region, this award would not have been possible.
Following our CMA win, Standing in the Doorway was also awarded the Archives Association of Ontario Institutional Award. We were awarded this "in recognition of the extraordinary and impactful community-driven exhibition which uses archival material to celebrate an important, historically marginalized, community and which develops inter-generational and cross-cultural connections and understanding."
Thank you again to the Canadian Museums Association and the Archives Association of Ontario for these honours and recognition. We aim to deliver more high quality, community driven exhibitions beginning with our upcoming Everyday Superheroes exhibition which is currently accepting community nominations for a chance to be a part of the exhibition until May 31st, 2024.

Standing in the Doorway: Lived Histories & Experiences of the Chinese Community has concluded its stay at Markham Museum. The exhibition will be travelling around the York Region with stays at:
- May 18 – July 27, 2024 – Whitchurch Stouffville Museum
- August 3 – November 2, 2024 - King Heritage Centre
- August 16-30, 2024 - York Region Central Administration Building
- January 13 – March 16, 2025 - Aurora Cultural Centre
- TBD - Richmond Hill Culture Centre
