Bur Oak

Did you know? The Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa) is the official tree of Markham!

The Bur Oak is a large growing, shade tree that can live between 200 to 300 years. This majestic champion of trees symbolises Markham’s strength and resilience throughout its deeply rooted history.

As Markham continues to grow as a City, plenty of Bur Oak trees have been protected against urban development and remain standing in Markham parks. Examples of these 200+ year-old trees can be found at various City parks including Bur Oak Park, Edith M. Mairs Park (formerly Forest Manor Parkette), and Yorkton Park. You may notice some trees have fencing enclosing them, this is to ensure the roots and the rest of the tree under the canopy continue to be healthy and to ensure soils remain uncompacted and native.

These trees add to Markham’s urban forest, providing increasing benefits for the well-being of our Markham communities, including social, economic and environmental benefits.

Bur Oak trees are part of the tree species that residents and property owners may request to be planted along city boulevards in front of their property. They are a good choice for urban planting as they tolerate air pollution, are tolerant of drought conditions, and can grow in various soil types.  If you are interested in having a Bur Oak tree planted along your boulevard, please email or call a Markham representative within the Contact Centre.
