MARKHAM, ON – August, 12, 2024 – The City of Markham is excited to announce the commencement of the Main Street Unionville Restoration, a significant initiative aimed at preserving and enhancing the historic charm of Main Street Unionville. This project will cover the area from the train tracks to north of Carlton Road, including the east lane from Main Street to Carlton Road.

The restoration will focus on critical infrastructure improvements, including the upgrade of watermains and storm sewers, installation of new sidewalks, boulevards, road surfaces, and a street light system from Hwy 7 to Carlton Road, on Carlton Road and the east lane. These enhancements will ensure that Main Street Unionville continues to be a vibrant and attractive destination for residents and visitors alike.

"We are committed to ensuring that Main Street Unionville retains its appeal and remains a thriving part of our community," said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. "This restoration is vital for the long-term sustainability of the area, and we are taking all necessary steps to minimize disruption and support our local businesses during this period."

The restoration will be split into two phases, first on the east lane and Carlton Road which is scheduled to begin in August, with an anticipated completion date targeted for the end of 2024. The second phase of the project on Main Street will begin in Spring 2025 with a completion date targeted for the end of 2025. Regular updates on the project's progress, traffic management, and other relevant information will be provided through the City of Markham’s website and social media channels.

In keeping with the City’s vision to enhance this heritage village, the project aims to balance the need for modernization with the preservation of its historic character. Main Street Unionville is a beloved regional destination, known for its unique retail stores and world-class cuisine, set against a backdrop of historic buildings and picturesque landscapes.

The City of Markham, along with the Unionville Business Improvement Area (UBIA), recognizes the importance of supporting local businesses during the construction period. An awareness campaign called, “Watch the future unfold!”, will be launched to encourage residents and visitors to witness the exciting makeover first hand. Shops and eateries will remain open for the duration of the restoration process. Signage, social media updates, and other communication channels will be used to keep the public informed about access routes and the ongoing availability of services and shops.

"We are thrilled to see the Main Street Unionville Restoration project commence," said Liam O’Dette, Chair of UBIA. "This initiative will not only enhance our historic charm but also support local businesses, ensuring that our community remains vibrant and welcoming for both residents and visitors during this transformation."
