Train Anti-Whistling — Stouffville GO Line

The City of Markham has completed implementation of Train Anti-Whistling at 15 public at-grade crossings in Markham. 

To eliminate train whistling, Markham has to follow an eight-step process as outlined in Transport Canada's Procedure for Train Whistling at Public Grade Crossings in order to meet the requirements of the Federal Railway Safety Act and Regulation. The procedure requires the railway companies and road authorities - in this case, the City of Markham, York Region and Metrolinx - to collaborate in finding the best option for making the crossings safe.

It is important to note that even when Metrolinx approves anti-whistling at 15 at-grade crossings, the whistling may be required for other Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR) requirements, locations, or at the train engineers' sole discretion.

August 2024 Update

The City of Markham, the Region of York and Metrolinx have worked together to successfully implement train anti-whistling measures at 15 out of the 16 at-grade crossings along the Stouffville GO line in Markham. These efforts have significantly improved safety and reduced noise disruptions for our community.

The Ninth Line crossing remains the final piece of this important initiative. However, several safety improvements are necessary before we can proceed with whistle cessation at this location. We are continuing our work with the Region of York and Metrolinx in finalizing the design and construction of these required upgrades and improvements with the safety of our community top of mind. The construction for these upgrades and improvements is anticipated to be completed by fall 2024. Following construction, the crossing will be reassessed with the new enhancements. Once it has been deemed that the crossing meets the necessary safety standards, a resolution for whistle cessation will be passed and shared with Transport Canada. Transport Canada will review and notify Metrolinx who will arrange to have the whistle ceased at 9th line.

December 2021 Update

The City of Markham has completed the implementation at two (2) rural at-grade crossings along the Stouffville GO line:

  • Elgin Mills Road

  • 19th Avenue

The City of Markham is working closely with York Region and Metrolinx in finalizing the design and implementation of train anti-whistling at one more at grade crossing on Ninth Line.

January 2021 Update

Whistle Cessation has now been implemented at thirteen (13) locations:

  • Major Mackenzie Drive

  • Castlemore Avenue

  • 16th Avenue

  • Main Street Markham

  • Snider Drive

  • Kennedy Road North

  • Main Street Unionville

  • Eureka Street

  • Highway 7

  • Denison Street

  • Kennedy Road South

  • Bur Oak Avenue

  • McCowan Road
