Certified candidates announced for the 2022 Markham Municipal Election
MARKHAM, ON – August 22, 2022 – Candidate registration for the 2022 Markham Municipal Election has now closed. City Clerk and Returning Officer Kimberley Kitteringham has confirmed the list of certified candidates for Markham City Council and Markham’s local school board trustee offices, which can be viewed at ElectionsMarkham.ca/CertifiedCandidates.
“As a leader in digital democracy, Markham is proud to be the first municipality in Ontario to provide a fully online candidate registration program as part of a suite of customer service enhancements for the upcoming municipal election,” said City Clerk and Returning Officer Kimberley Kitteringham. “All 71 candidates registered online using our new eSignature platform, allowing for a convenient and accessible end-to-end digital experience.”
Markham voters are encouraged to learn about their candidates and local issues ahead of having their say and voting this Fall. Markham voters and permanent residents living in the City who donate $50 or more to a City Council candidate’s campaign can apply for a rebate from the City of Markham (some exceptions apply).
From October 14 to 24, Markham voters will have 250 hours to vote online or by paper ballot in the 2022 Markham Municipal Election for the offices of Mayor, Regional Councillor, Ward Councillor and School Board Trustee. Local government and school boards deliver important services that residents and businesses rely on every day.
“Markham continues to modernize its municipal elections by breaking down barriers and making voting accessible to all voters,” said City Clerk and Returning Officer Kimberley Kitteringham. “By delivering the largest online voting program from coast-to-coast-to-coast, Elections Markham is providing a safe, secure, eco-friendly and contactless option for voters to participate in the 2022 Markham Municipal Election.
It’s important for voters to check, update or add their information to the Municipal Voters’ List ahead of the municipal election. The Municipal Voters' List for the 2022 Markham Municipal Election is not the same list used for the provincial or federal elections.
In early October, Elections Markham will send Voter Information Letters to everyone who is registered to vote on the Municipal Voters’ List. If someone doesn’t receive a Voter Information Letter in the mail by October 12, they may not be registered at their current address or at all. Register to vote online, at the Markham Civic Centre’s Contact Centre, at any Voting Place during Voting Days, or at any Markham Public Library branch starting September 1.
By casting a ballot in the upcoming municipal election, Markham voters will play an important role in local democracy and help create a more vibrant, inclusive and diverse community. Get ready to vote by using the Elections Markham Voter Checklist.
