City of Markham mourns the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
MARKHAM, ON – September 8, 2022 – The City of Markham joins the people of Great Britain and the Commonwealth in mourning the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, at the age of 96.
“It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “For more than 70 years, Her Majesty served admirably as Queen of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. Her devotion to a life of service was admirable as being the longest serving British monarch in history. On behalf of Members of Council and the City of Markham, I would like to offer sincere condolences to King Charles III and the Royal Family on the passing of Her Majesty The Queen.”
Queen Elizabeth II was born on April 21, 1926. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is the longest-reigning British monarch, and longest-serving woman head of state in world history. Her reign saw the Queen as the head of 54 Commonwealth countries. The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrating 70 years of her reign was marked in 2022.
The Queen (then Princess Elizabeth) and The Duke of Edinburgh first toured Canada in the fall of 1951. Since her accession to the Throne, Her Majesty has completed more royal tours in Canada than to any other Commonwealth country. The Queen's 2010 tour marked her 22nd official tour, and final tour of Canada as Queen.
A virtual Book of Condolence is available for members of the public to sign at markham.ca/BookOfCondolence until September 29.
For those wishing to handwrite a message, a physical Book of Condolence will be available at Markham Civic Centre starting Monday, September 12 through to Friday, September 16 from 3 to 8 PM.
All official flags at Markham Civic Centre, fire stations, civic facilities, including libraries and community centres will be lowered to half-mast in honour of the passing of Her Majesty.
