Markham athletes take on Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games

MARKHAM, ON – August 19, 2021 – Markham athletes are once again taking the world stage – this time at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games from August 24 to September 5, 2021. The Paralympic Games is an exciting time for sports in the City of Markham, Canada’s most diverse city, and home to many internationally-ranked athletes and even more rising young stars.

“Markham is home to exceptional talent and our community will be cheering on our four homegrown athletes as they head to Tokyo to compete in the Paralympic Games,” said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “These athletes will be proudly representing our city and country as they pursue their dreams and go for the gold in Tokyo. On behalf of the City of Markham, we wish them and all members of Team Canada well. Go Canada Go!”

Markham is proud of the hometown para-athletes for being a part of our strong sporting legacy and culture, for representing our community, for promoting accessibility and inclusiveness through sporting excellence, and for inspiring the next generation. We congratulate them for overcoming COVID-19 challenges in training and travel, and for embodying the motto of the Paralympic movement: “Spirit in Motion.”

The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games follow a successful Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games where athletes connected to Markham made international and Canadian Olympic history!

Andre De Grasse won three athletics medals at Tokyo 2020 – for a total of six - and kept his record of winning a medal at every Olympic event he has ever competed in.

Former Markham Soccer Club member Jayde Riviere and Team Canada won Canada’s first ever gold in Women’s Football (Soccer) against Sweden in an epic penalty shootout.

Congratulations to all athletes connected to Markham who competed in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Thank you for making us proud.
