Markham enters Provincewide Shutdown on April 3
MARKHAM, ON – April 1, 2021 – At 12:01 AM on Saturday, April 3, the City of Markham will enter the Provincewide Shutdown, as part of the Government of Ontario’s “emergency brake” measures to help stop the spread of COVID-19. The Provincewide Shutdown will remain in effect for at least four weeks. Ontario’s current colour-coded COVID-19 response framework will be paused while the Provincewide Shutdown is in effect.
The Government of Ontario is implementing the enhanced health and safety measures as a result of an alarming surge in case numbers and COVID-19 hospitalizations across the province as we experience a third wave of the pandemic. COVID-19 hospitalizations are now at their highest since the beginning of the health care crisis. These increases are being driven by COVID-19 variants, which are transmitted easily and result in a higher risk of death and hospitalization, including in younger populations.
All residents are asked to limit trips outside the home to necessities such as food, medication, medical appointments, supporting vulnerable community members or exercising outdoors. Find out how you can get active safely to support your mental, emotional and physical health during the Provincewide Shutdown by visiting markham.ca/GetActive.
Markham residents are also urged not to travel between regions as cases of the COVID-19 variant continue to rise. Minimizing travel and interactions with those outside of your household will help keep your loved ones safe, save lives and protect the healthcare system.
Gathering limits for organized public events and social gatherings under the Provincewide Shutdown are:
- Indoor: 0 people (limit interactions to those in your household)
- Outdoor: 5 people maximum (except for gatherings with members of the same household or gatherings of members of one household and one other person from another household who lives alone)
- Weddings, funerals, religious services:
- 15% occupancy per room indoors
- To the number of individuals that can maintain a safe distance of 2 metres or 6 feet outdoors (this does not include social gatherings associated with these services such as receptions, which are not permitted indoors and are limited to five people outdoors)
Residents are encouraged to gather virtually with friends and family over Easter and Ramadan and to avoid traditional, large in-person gatherings. An individual who lives alone (household of one) may also gather solely with one other household. Employers in all industries should make every effort to allow employees to work from home.
The strengthened measures for the Provincewide Shutdown include, but are not limited to:
- Restricting in-person shopping in all retail settings, including:
- 50% capacity limit for supermarkets, grocery stores, convenience stores, indoor farmers' markets, other stores that primarily sell food and pharmacies
- 25% per cent for all other retail including big box stores
- Prohibiting personal care services
- Prohibiting indoor and outdoor dining (take-out, drive-through and delivery only)
- Prohibiting the use of facilities for indoor or outdoor sports and recreational fitness (e.g. gyms) with very limited exceptions
- Requiring day camps to close
The City of Markham’s COVID-19 affected services are as follows:
- Outdoor, in-person recreation programs are cancelled
- Library, recreation and fitness programs continue to be offered virtually
- City-owned community centres, arenas, pools, fitness centres, the Markham Museum, the Flato Markham Theatre and the Varley Art Gallery will remain closed
- Markham Public Library will continue to offer select online services
