Markham Fire and Emergency Services Fire Chief Adam J. Grant named Chief of the Year
MARKHAM, ON – February 1, 2023 – The City of Markham is pleased to announce Markham Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) Fire Chief, Adam J. Grant, was named as Chief of the Year by the Ontario Associatiosn of Fire Chiefs.
Chief Grant was awarded this recognition for his outstanding leadership and contributions in the fire sector.
“Congratulations Fire Chief Adam Grant,” said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “Markham is proud of you and your outstanding efforts in continuing to champion equity, diversity and inclusion within the fire service. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to ensuring our community is safe.”
“I’d like to extend my best wishes to Chief Grant on this wonderful achievement,” said CAO, Andy Taylor. “Chief Grant is the consummate professional and he has made great strides in modernizing Markham’s fire service. It’s nice to see his efforts recognized by his peers, as reflected with this award.”
A veteran of MFES for the past 17 years, since his appointment to Fire Chief in November 2020, Chief Grant has led innovative initiatives including:
- The introduction of a new auxiliary vehicle equipped with the DRAGO to the Markham fleet, a first in North America for any Fire Service. DRAGO shoots mist over 200 feet with a width of 50 feet wide -- requiring only two firefighters to operate. Using DRAGO, our firefighters also have an increased level of safety.
- On November 9, 2021, MFES announced an agreement with Humber College to enhance inclusion and reduce participation barriers for Black, Indigenous and Racialized Markham students who wish to build a career in firefighting. Through this program, Humber offers eight scholarships for students to study and train. Successful scholarship students who complete their schooling and certification will be offered a job interview with MFES, and if successful, offered employment as a Markham firefighter. Learn more.
- On July 26, 2021, MFES and Barrie Fire and Emergency Service (BFES) signed an agreement to provide 24/7 emergency call-taking and dispatch service to Markham by the end of 2021. This agreement allows MFES to improve its responsiveness, realize capital savings, and assists in the modernization of emergency services. Learn more.
