Markham recognized by Forbes as Canada’s best City employer for second consecutive year
MARKHAM, ON – January 25, 2022 – Today, the City of Markham was named one of Canada’s Best Employers for 2022 and the best City employer by Forbes for the second consecutive year. The City of Markham is ranked in the top two for Government Services and 15th among the 300 employers on the list, advancing from 18th place in 2021.
“We are honoured to be named one of Canada’s Best Employers for 2022 and the top city in Canada for the second consecutive year. This recognition reaffirms Markham’s position as a leader committed to fostering a welcoming, diverse and inclusive work environment,” said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “This ranking in the best of times is cause for celebration but given we improved our ranking in the midst of all the current challenges, it’s a testament to our staff’s continued leadership, commitment and hard work. We are also proud to be joined by an impressive list of Markham-based companies that share our vision in delivering exceptional customer service and in shaping Markham’s innovation landscape.”
The City of Markham was selected as one of Canada’s Best Employers for 2022 by Forbes and Statista based on an independent survey of more than 10,000 Canadian employees working for companies employing at least 500 people in Canada.
“In Markham, extraordinary things are done by extraordinary people and we are deeply honoured to once again be recognized for our corporate culture and our efforts in providing staff a rewarding and fulfilling career as well as a welcoming and inclusive workspace," said CAO Andy Taylor. "The City of Markham is proud of its recruitment and retention programs we have built over time, that positively engage and invest in our staff, while instilling a sense of belonging in the organization. We are currently undertaking an equity audit and update to our Diversity Action Plan, which includes a commitment to using an equity lens on all decisions made in our organization. Our recognition as a leading Canadian employer shines a light on the great work being done at the City, alongside other recognized leading employers based in Markham.”
Markham’s strength as an employer lies in its People Plan which supports the City’s strategic goal of delivering exceptional services by exceptional people and focuses on comprehensive onboarding, continuous learning opportunities, a variety of wellness initiatives, transparent communication, and diversity and inclusion.
Markham remains committed to employee mental health and wellness as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, hosting a number of wellness conversations amongst leaders and employees. In addition to developing work from home guidelines and health and safety guidelines for staff in the field, the City developed new policies to address COVID-19 vaccination and testing as well as enhancing sick time to address public health requirements to keep our staff and the community safe during the pandemic. A hybrid work model was also piloted as we plan for the new future of work. Online resources were expanded, including virtual learning opportunities to support staff development, as well as an ongoing focus on diversity and inclusion initiatives. As employee input is highly valued at the City of Markham, a comprehensive staff satisfaction survey was also recently completed to ensure continuous improvement in our workplace.
We congratulate the Region of York for also being recognized as one of Forbes’ Canada’s Best Employers for 2022.
We are pleased and proud to be recognized along with a number of global companies with a large presence in Markham including AMD, IBM, Honda, Aviva Insurance, TD Bank, General Motors, GE, and many others.
