Markham Spring maintenance services in full swing

Markham’s road rehabilitation efforts are among the best in the province, with a significant portion of the City’s roads in a state of good repair. Every year, road and sidewalk surfaces are proactively inspected, treated and repaired using environmentally friendly methods. In 2020, approximately 3,500 potholes were repaired, a number well above the provincial standard.

This Spring, Markham is expanding a pilot with Visual Defence Inc. that uses artificial intelligence (AI) software to detect and log potholes. This year, the pilot will be expanded to also detect other surface continuities - so repair crews can respond quickly and efficiently.

In testament to this innovative pilot, the City of Markham is the proud co-recipient of the 2020 Ontario Good Roads Association John Niedra Better Practices Award which recognizes innovation and achievement that improves the efficiency of municipal transportation and public works services and operations.

Markham’s investments in transportation planning, infrastructure, education and programming have also earned the City its most recent recognition - a Silver Bicycle Friendly Communities Award from the Share the Road Cycling Coalition.

Crews are currently cutting grass, making repairs, and cleaning up litter in parks, open spaces and trails. Residents are reminded to follow public health guidelines at all times to help stop the spread of COVID-19. This includes continuing to physical distance when walking or riding through parks and trails and to wear a face mask if physical distancing becomes difficult.

Street trees will continue to be pruned as Markham enters its second year of the Neighbourhood Tree Maintenance Program. Crews are also working to help reduce the gypsy moth populations in Markham. Learn how you can protect the trees on your property from this invasive species at markham.ca/trees.

Help Keep Markham Beautiful and dispose of used facemasks, gloves and wipes in park garbage bins or bring them home for curbside pick-up. Household waste and pet waste belong in the correct container for curbside pick-up at your home. Please do not litter in our parks and open spaces. Use Markham’s “What Goes Where” tool on the Access Markham mobile app or on the City website if you need more information.
