Markham Sustainable Neighbourhood Small Grant program now accepting applications
MARKHAM, ON – April 12, 2021 – The City of Markham is now accepting applications for the Sustainable Neighbourhood Small Grant program for resident-led community projects that promote education, understanding and participation in environmental sustainability.
Markham residents are encouraged to start submitting their applications during Earth Month as we inspire global change through local action. Successful applicants may be eligible for a grant of up to $500 to bring their idea, project or initiative to life. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time (ET).
This is Markham’s newest environmental funding program for residents and is a community initiative by the Markham Environmental Sustainability Fund to help increase grassroots environmental awareness, action and engagement. The program supports and empowers residents to undertake their own #greenMarkham initiatives – in their homes and gardens, on the road, at work and in the community.
“The City of Markham is a municipal leader in fighting climate change and our residents are deeply committed to sustainability initiatives,” said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “This program is a wonderful opportunity for our community to think green during Earth Month and come up with innovative ideas that can support our sustainability objectives and raise environmental awareness.”
Projects that receive funding will help achieve one or more of the following:
- Help reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
- Enhance the health, resilience and sustainability of our ecosystem and natural environment
- Help attain Markham’s Zero Waste targets
- Beautify neighbourhoods and communities
- Conserve and protect our natural environment
Projects, activities and virtual events that aim to increase environmental awareness and engagement will be given high priority. Youth-led or youth-centric projects are strongly encouraged.
Together with community leadership, residents have the potential to bring change and build vibrant, sustainable neighbourhoods.
