Markham Wins Esteemed Awards For Budgeting & Financial Reporting
MARKHAM, ON – March 1, 2021 – The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) has recognized the City of Markham with two prestigious awards – the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, for the 20th consecutive year, and the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting, for the 19th consecutive year. The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award recognizes Markham’s 2020 budget, and the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting recognizes Markham’s annual financial report for the year ending December 31, 2019.
The GFOA is a non-profit association serving more than 20,000 government finance professionals throughout North America with a mandate to enhance and promote the professional management of governments for the public benefit. It identifies and develops financial policies and best practices and promotes their use through education, training, facilitation of member networking and leadership.
“The City of Markham continues to stand out as a municipal leader in its budgeting practices and financial reporting, and this recognition is a reflection of our Council and staff’s commitment to financial leadership excellence,” said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “We continue to deliver exceptional services to residents while keeping taxes low. I would like to commend the hard work of Markham Council and staff to ensure our budgets are well-communicated, timely and transparent.”
Budget Chief Councillor Amanda Collucci said, “To be acknowledged every year for two decades shows that Markham has established a reputation for strong and prudent fiscal management, and continues to showcase the City’s ongoing commitment to organizational and financial excellence. On behalf of the Budget Committee, I want to thank the dedicated Finance staff, both past and present, who have been associated with these publications, and I extend my congratulations to them on this outstanding achievement.”
The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award recognizes Markham for preparing a comprehensive 2020 budget document that allows residents to be fully informed of the City’s policies, corporate initiatives and financial plans, and that fosters better decision making and accountability. The submission must meet nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation to receive this award. The GFOA assesses each budget submission for its merit as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide and communications device. This award is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting.
The Canadian Award for Financial Reporting recognizes Markham’s excellence in governmental accounting and financial reporting for publishing an easily readable and efficiently organized annual financial report for the year ending December 31, 2019. The award signifies that the City delivered a comprehensive financial report that provided transparency and disclosure over and above the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles, as set by the Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB) of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.
