MFES awarded Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada grant
MARKHAM, ON – July 14, 2021 – Markham Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) is the proud recipient of a grant totalling $19,210 from Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada. The grant will be used to produce several high-quality videos aimed to educate residents in the community about the importance of fire safety.
“Markham Fire and Emergency Services is a leader in fire prevention education and this grant will further assist them in sharing important life-saving information using effective communications tools,” said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “I would like to thank Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada for recognizing the need to use enhanced forms of communication and appreciate their funding to Markham Fire and Emergency Services to produce content that will enhance our public safety education efforts.”
“We are committed to helping organizations such as Markham Fire and Emergency Services at the City of Markham continue their lifesaving work within local communities. We are honoured to be able to award this grant and do our part to ensure that Markham is safer for everyone, including first responders,” said Robin Peters, Executive Director of Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada.
These new videos, which will be made possible with funding from the grant, will be shared with Markham’s youth in primary school grades one through four, and they will also be made available for public viewing online on Markham Fire and Emergency’s YouTube channel.
This is the second year that MFES has received a grant from Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada. The 2019 grant of close to $5,000 was used to help fund firetruck safety messaging for MFES’ fleet of trucks on the topic of fire escape planning.
“Throughout this year, we have worked hard to reach residents who are spending a lot more time at home due to COVID-19 public health measures,” said Markham Fire and Emergency Services Chief Adam Grant. “This year’s $19,210 grant will help us educate youth about public safety by creating and sharing high-quality videos - a format that is visually appealing and accessible. It will also help us reach people in Markham’s diverse communities who may find video more accessible than text. As firefighters, we are very proud that a business started by former firefighters is giving back to the community.”

About Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada: In 2005, the Firehouse Subs Founders established Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation in the U.S. with the mission of providing funding, lifesaving equipment, and educational opportunities to first responders and public safety organizations. Ten years later, with the opening of the first Canadian Firehouse Subs restaurant in 2015, the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada was born. Through this registered charity (BN/Registration #83145 2990), Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada has granted more than $1.5M to hometown heroes in Canada. Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada is also supported by in-restaurant fundraising initiatives. Each restaurant recycles five-gallon pickle buckets, available to guests for a $3 donation to the Foundation. Donation canisters on register counters explain the non-profit’s mission and collect spare change, while the Round Up Program allows guests to “round up” their bill to the nearest dollar. All funds raised benefit the Foundation.
