Mourning former councillor Michael Popovich
Mourning former councillor Michael Popovich
Statement of condolences from Mayor Frank Scarpitti
It is with great sadness that I share news of the passing of former Town of Markham councillor, Michael Popovich. Michael was courageously battling pancreatic cancer.
Michael was a dedicated and passionate public servant. He served on Markham Council from 1983 to 1988, a period of two terms. During his time on Markham Council, he served in various roles including Chair of Building Committee, Chair of Engineering Committee, Vice Chair of Planning and Vice-Chair of Transit Committee. As the local councillor for Thornhill, Michael was appointed to the board of the Heintzman House, Thornhill Recreation Area Committee and German Mills Committee. From 1986-88, he served on the board of Markham Public Library.
Michael was a champion for diversity and inclusion initiatives. During his time on council, I worked closely with Michael to establish a working group to establish Markham’s first Race Relations Committee. His efforts will never be forgotten. We pay tribute to his contributions to the growth and success of our city.
An accomplished writer, Michael wrote for the Toronto Telegram and was awarded the National Newspaper Award for a feature he had published. His articles and photos appeared in Time, Life Magazine, Maclean’s, Reader’s Digest, Saturday Night, and the Globe and Mail. Michael also went on to build his own real estate business.
On behalf of Members of Council and the City of Markham, I offer my sincere condolences to his wife Evelyn, his sons Curtis and David, his six grandchildren and their family and friends. The City of Markham will be lowering official flags at the Civic Centre in his honour.
