New transit funding announced by Prime Minister Trudeau – Good sign for Yonge North Subway Extension
This morning, Prime Minister Trudeau announced $15 billion for new public transit projects over the next 8 years. The historic new program consists of a permanent public transit fund of $3 billion per year (recurring) starting in 2026. I applaud the Prime Minister and his government for committing to a stable public transit infrastructure fund that will support projects like subway extensions.
This is a positive sign for the Yonge North Subway Extension, York Region’s top transit infrastructure project. It is one of the most studied and justified transit projects in the country and we cannot wait any longer to get shovels in the ground. By earmarking these infrastructure dollars, the federal government is confirming its commitment to making public transit investment a high priority.
As the Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure, Catherine McKenna stated today, infrastructure investment will be key to economic recovery. The Yonge North Subway Extension is an ideal project to kick-start the economy and advance the government’s climate change targets. The impact of this project is significant. It will support more than 60,000 jobs and reduce our carbon footprint, saving over 13 tonnes of greenhouse emissions per workday.
York Region looks forward to moving this project to construction.
