Markham Historical Cemeteries
A JOURNEY INTO MARKHAM’S PAST
We launched a video series highlighting Markham’s historic cemeteries in celebration of our 225th Anniversary of the founding of Markham.
City Historian Lorne recounts the history of Markham cemeteries, pointing out interesting features and highlighting people, places and events that have helped shaped our community.
Lorne has been involved with Markham’s cemeteries since 1995, when he took over from his father on the Cemetery Board. He was the natural choice when the City decided to make a series of videos featuring Markham’s historic cemeteries.
These burial grounds in what is now Markham stretch back thousands of years, to the first Indigenous Peoples who lived along its river valleys.
Whether it’s civic history, an interest in trees, a search for your ancestors or just a desire for a quiet, reflective place - Markham’s cemeteries may be just what you are looking for.
