Yonge Corridor Land Use and Built Form Study
What are we doing and why?
The City of Markham completed a Yonge Corridor Land Use and Built Form Study (“Study”) to confirm the transit-oriented community potential surrounding the Steeles, Clark and Royal Orchard Station Areas. This Study will inform the upcoming Yonge Street Corridor Secondary Plan (“Secondary Plan”) process and updates to the City of Markham’s Official Plan.
How does this work relate to the Yonge North Subway Extension (“YNSE”)?
The Province of Ontario is undertaking studies for the YNSE. On March 18, 2021, Metrolinx released the Initial Business Case that affects the City of Markham and recommends advancing design of the YNSE. The Initial Business Case proposed up to four stations along the 8-kilometre subway extension – Steeles, Bridge, High Tech, and one additional neighbourhood station at Cummer, Clark, or Royal Orchard. On July 16, 2021, the Ontario government, in partnership with the Government of Canada, announced Clark Station as the fourth neighbourhood station. On April 20, 2022, Royal Orchard was announced as an additional confirmed station.
Where is the Yonge Corridor Study Area?
The Yonge Corridor is located at the southwest corner of the City of Markham, and is bordered by the City of Vaughan to the west and City of Toronto to the south. The Study area is generally bound by Yonge Street to the east, the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery to the north, Dudley Avenue and Inverlochy Boulevard to the east and Steeles Avenue to the south.
What is the study process?
This Study is an initial phase of the Secondary Plan process. The Study was initiated in June 2021 and an Interim Report and Presentation went to Markham’s Development Services Committee on October 25, 2021. At this meeting, Council directed staff to undertake public consultation. A Virtual Community Information Meeting was held on February 17, 2022. Following the Community Information Meeting, the Study was revised to incorporate and address community and stakeholder feedback. In June 2022, the final Study was endorsed by Markham Council.
