FIRE SAFETY & EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
- Master Fire Plan
The City of Markham initiated the Master Fire Plan (MFP) study as part of its comprehensive community planning initiatives to mange the projected growth within the municipality over the next ten-year period. The plan includes recommendations to address both short-term and long-term strategies for the municipality, consistent with the master fire plan process outlined within the Office of the Fire Marshal, Ontario’s (OFM), Shaping Fire-Safe Communities initiative.

- Electrical Safety at Home
It is important to protect yourself and your home from electrical hazards. Here are some tips to keep your home safe.
Set yourself up for safety
Don't overload outlets
Unplug appliances when not in use to save energy and reduce risk of shock and fire
Regularly inspect electrical cords and extension cords for damage
Extension cords should only be used on a temporary basis
Never plug a space heater or fan into an extension cord or power strip. Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room
Never run cords under rugs, carpets, doors or windows
Make sure cords do not become tripping hazards
Keep paper and other potential combustibles at least 3 feet away from space heaters or other heat sources such as the furnace or fireplace
Use proper wattage for lamps and lighting
Make sure your home has working smoke alarms installed on every level of the home and inside and outside of sleeping areas. Test them monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year. Units should be replaced every 10 years
- Home Fire Sprinkler Safety
Home fire sprinklers provide affordable, reliable and effective protection for you and your family. Here are some fast facts:
- Fires are fast. They can become deadly in less than three minutes
- New houses burn just as often as old houses, and are sometimes more deadly because of the use of modern building materials
- Home fire sprinklers can contain and may even extinguish a fire in less time than it would take the fire department to arrive on the scene
- Ninety per cent of fires are contained by the operation of just one home fire sprinkler
- Home fire sprinklers use only a fraction of the water that’s used by fire department hoses
