A public art project by Holly Ward and Kevin Schmidt |
Featuring works from the permanent collection Curated by Anik Glaude Organized by the Varley Art Gallery of Markham Exhibition runs January 27 to May 5, 2024 |
Conceived by artist duo Holly Ward and Kevin Schmidt, this public art project unfolded as a series of constructed situations along the Rouge River Trail in 2023. Augmented by specially designed t-shirts and musical carts, it is brought to life through everyday activities embodied by local community groups and amateur musicians. In January 2024, the project transitions to the Varley Art Gallery to frame individual experiences along the trail as "artworks" presented as objects and ephemera in an interactive installation. Named for chaos theory's “butterfly effect” metaphor, the exhibition delves into the idea that artists are not isolated creators but are deeply influenced by the multifaceted environments surrounding them—be they ecological, cultural, political, and beyond. This approach challenges visitors to consider the profound connections between the artist and the world. The exhibition features works from our permanent collection including significant new acquisitions. Katherine Takpannie, Amauti (detail), 2018, archival pigment ink print, 91.4 cm x 137.2 cm.
