Census 2016 Names Markham the Most Diverse Community in the GTA
Markham's rich cultural and ethnic diversity is on display today, as Statistics Canada released their 2016 Census data, dubbing the City the most diverse in all of the GTA. The data revealed that nearly 80 per cent of Markham residents self-identify as visible minorities.
“The latest census numbers confirm what we’ve always known, we’ve been Canada’s most diverse community since 2008 and we continue to attract newcomers from around the world,” says Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “We view diversity as strength, not only contributing to the economic success of Markham but to enriching the social fabric of our communities. Many new Canadians bring and share their rich traditions and cultures allowing us all to experience the world in our neighbourhoods.”
The City of Markham is Canada's most diverse city, with about half of the population coming to the community from outside of Canada, nearly 60 per cent of residents speaking a first language other than English and 77.9 per cent of residents identifying themselves as a visible minority. Markham thrives and continues to lead because of our diversity and focus on inclusion.
The City is committed to the benefits of diversity through our Diversity Action Plan: Everyone Welcome. Diversity is one of our four strategic priorities in Building Markham's Future Together: Strategic Plan 2015-2019.
The City of Markham works to promote diversity at home and across Canada as a long standing member of the Canadian Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination.
“On global business missions, I’m often accompanied by residents from our community who share their stories of success and there is no greater way to sell Markham,” says Mayor Scarpitti. “We have a highly-skilled, educated and diverse workforce, many who arrive here are armed with an entrepreneurial spirit that is key to economic prosperity.”
