City of Markham unveils Amar Erry Atrium at Aaniin Community Centre
MARKHAM, ON – May 16, 2024 – This past weekend, the City of Markham unveiled the Amar Erry Atrium, located inside of Aaniin Community Centre. The newly-named atrium pays tribute to the late Amar Erry, who was a long-time and dedicated community member, volunteer, and former president of the Vedic Cultural Centre – Arya Samaj Markham.
The late Mr. Erry served on boards and committees such as the Canadian Federation of Intercultural Friendship and Taste of Asia. He was also a spiritual, cultural and humanitarian leader and mentor who will always be remembered for his desire to bring people together in a spirit of shared humanity, regardless of faith or cultural background. He was a champion and driver for diversity and inclusion in Markham.
“Amar was a man who enriched the lives of those who knew him, and we were all made better for having known him,” said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “He was a man whose pillars were about unity, peace, respect and love. The role he played in interfaith discussions helped foster a spirit of collaboration in Markham through the years. I will forever hold with the greatest affection the friendship Amar and I shared.”
One of the primary features of the Amar Erry Atrium is the amount of abundant light that shines into the space. This location is especially fitting to honour the late Mr. Erry, whose light and desire to bring people together now serves as a common space for visitors to enjoy for years to come.
