Fire Department Announcement
Following the departure of Fire Chief Adam Grant, we are pleased to announce that Chris Nearing has accepted the role of Fire Chief effective August 8, 2023 until July 31, 2024.
Chris joined Markham Fire and Emergency Services in 1995 and has been a proud Markham resident since 1999. In the role of Deputy Fire Chief for the past 6 years, Chris has shown strong leadership and a commitment to providing exceptional service to our residents. Together with his team, Chris will continue to inspire the Fire Department’s ongoing commitment to modernization and innovation.
To support Fire Chief Nearing and Deputy Fire Chief Matt Keay during this period, we are also pleased to announce that Ryan Best has been promoted to Deputy Fire Chief, effective September 5, 2023. In addition, Robert Garland will be an Interim Deputy Fire Chief from September 5, 2023 to July 31, 2024.
Ryan Best started his career with Markham Fire and Emergency Services in 2001 as a suppression firefighter. Ryan brought with him a strong understanding of fire prevention and fire protection systems from his experience in the private sector. Ryan has held the ranks of Captain and Battalion Chief where he has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities over his 22-year career. Ryan has embraced and supported the MFES management team’s strategic initiatives and looks forward to playing a greater role in his position as the Deputy Fire Chief.
Robert Garland started with Markham Fire and Emergency Services in 2005 as a suppression firefighter. Robert brought several years of experience as an emergency room nurse and assumed a leadership position for 17 years as an on-shift medical instructor. Robert has held the ranks of Captain and Battalion Chief and is passionate about emergency scene operations. Robert has been an active leader throughout his career, understanding and teaching the evolving science related to modern fire suppression tactics.
In their new roles, Ryan and Robert will be responsible for day-to-day operations and continue to support all divisions of Markham Fire and Emergency Services. Working alongside Deputy Fire Chief Keay and Fire Chief Nearing, the City of Markham is well positioned to support our diverse and evolving fire service.
We are very proud of the talent we have developed in Markham Fire and Emergency Services and the ability to fill these key positions from within our organization. We are pleased to provide these opportunities to these individuals who have exhibited significant dedication, experience and stewardship over the years.
