Robert Garland Appointed Deputy Fire Chief for Markham Fire and Emergency Services
MARKHAM, ON – January 13, 2024 – The City of Markham is proud to announce the appointment of Robert Garland as Deputy Fire Chief for Markham Fire and Emergency Services (MFES), effective January 6, 2025.
A dedicated member of MFES for nearly 20 years, Deputy Fire Chief Garland has demonstrated exceptional leadership, experience, and a deep commitment to the safety and well-being of the Markham community. His promotion marks a significant milestone in his career and underscores the City’s confidence in his ability to uphold the highest standards of service and safety.
"The appointment of Robert Garland to Deputy Fire Chief is a testament to the Services' ability to recruit and develop well-rounded leaders that are community builders and focused on innovating in the field of fire prevention and protection," said Chief Administrative Officer Andy Taylor.
"Deputy Fire Chief Garland has been a pillar of dedication and excellence within MFES," said Fire Chief Chris Nearing. "His unique combination of medical and firefighting expertise, coupled with his proven leadership, positions him perfectly to help lead our team into the future."
Before joining MFES as a suppression firefighter and advancing to the rank of Battalion Chief, Garland worked as a Registered Nurse. This dual experience has shaped his holistic approach to emergency response, enabling him to integrate critical thinking, compassionate care, and operational efficiency in his role. His contributions have significantly enhanced the department’s ability to deliver exceptional service to Markham residents.
In addition to his extensive fire service experience, Deputy Fire Chief Garland recently completed an 11-month secondment as Deputy Fire Chief, where he exemplified his leadership capabilities and commitment to the department's success.
As Deputy Fire Chief, Garland will focus on fostering operational excellence, maintaining the highest safety standards, and strengthening the department’s connection to the community. His forward-thinking leadership will support MFES’s ongoing mission to provide exceptional emergency services and protect the lives and property of Markham’s residents.
