Join Yan Wu, the City of Markham’s Public Art Curator, for a guided tour in Mandarin at the Varley. She will walk through the two exhibitions currently on view, To go boldly and Summer Solstice, exploring how the ideas of science fiction in art gallery, popular culture, fandom, and solar phenomena are contemplated and illustrated in contemporary artworks and the gallery’s collection.

本次的国语导览活动将由万锦市政府公共艺术策展人吴彦领你参观瓦利美术馆的夏季大展《勇往直前》和馆藏展《夏至》，和你一起探索科幻小说、同人圈和节气等等的流行文化字眼如何化身走进美术馆，成为艺术创作的起点和策略。

本次的國語導覽活動將由萬錦市政府公共藝術策展人吳彥領你參觀瓦利美術館的夏季大展《勇往直前》和館藏展《夏至》，和你一起探索科幻小說、同人圈和節氣等等的流行文化字眼如何化身走進美術館，成為藝術創作的起點與策略。

Yan Wu is a curator, writer, and translator whose work focuses on the intersections of contemporary art, architecture, and the making of public space. She is currently Public Art Curator for the City of Markham, where she recently oversaw the city’s first five-year public art master plan and is now managing its implementation. Wu was the Curator-in-Residence at the Art Museum at the University of Toronto (2016-17), and where she recently guest-curated a series of screen-based new commissions titled Immaterial Architecture (2021) and Chinese artist Miao Ying’s first solo exhibition in Canada (2022). In 2015, she was assistant curator for the inaugural Shanghai Urban Space Art Season, and in 2013, co-curated the Canada Pavilion at the fifth Bi-City Urbanism/Architecture Biennale in Shenzhen China. Commissioned by Sui Jian Guo Foundation and the Sculpture Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, she has co-translated seminal books into Chinese, including Rosalind Krauss’s Passages in Modern Sculpture, Lucy Lippard’s Six Years, Dan Graham’s Rock My Religion and Formless by Yves-Alain Bois and Rosalind Krauss. Also, commissioned by the M+ Museum in Hong Kong, Wu co-translated John Cage’s Not Wanting to Say Anything About Marcel (2020) into Chinese and authored the Chinese text for an interactive website about Marcel Duchamp’s Boîte-en-valise. Born and raised in Shanghai, Wu moved to Canada in 2001.

吴彦出生于上海，2001 年移居加拿大。多伦多大学建筑、景观与设计学院策展研究硕士，圭尔夫大学计算机学士学位。现任加拿大万锦市政府的公共艺术策展人，专攻当代艺术在公共空间的可能性。主管完成了万锦市的首个公共艺术五年总体规划，并策划制作了题为“Becoming Public Art: Working Models & Case Studies for Art in Public”的线上峰会，目前正在管理总规的运作实施和具体项目策划。曾任多伦多大学美术馆的驻留策展人，策划了架接建筑和艺术的实验建筑展览及竞赛项目《Making Models》、探索当代屏幕空间的线上委约作品系列《Immaterial Architecture》以及中国艺术家苗颖在加拿大的首次个展。 此前曾任首届上海城市空间艺术季的助理策展人和第五届深港城市\建筑双城双年展加拿大馆的联合策展人。受隋建国基金会和中央美院雕塑系的委约，主持完成的中文译作包括罗莎琳·克劳斯的《现代雕塑的变迁》、露西·利帕德的《六年》、丹·格雷厄姆的《摇滚我的信仰》和伊夫-阿兰·博瓦和罗莎琳·克劳斯的《无定形：使用指南》。此外，受香港 M+ 博物馆委约，参与翻译了约翰·凯奇的《不想谈论任何有关马赛尔的事》，并撰写马塞尔·杜尚的 《手提箱里的盒子》的中文文本。
