Markham commemorates National Day of Mourning with new “We Remember. We Commit” video
“On this National Day of Mourning the City of Markham remembers and commits,” says Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “We remember workers who died, were injured or became ill from their job. One life lost is one too many. We commit to protecting workers and preventing workplace tragedies. The City of Markham honours all workers who risk their health or safety to serve others. We continue working to ensure all of our workplaces are safe and healthy. We ensure work can be performed safely by ensuring our staff have the skills and receive the training and information they need to protect their health and do their jobs safely. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to a safe and healthy workplace.”
Commemorated nationally every year to ensure that workplace tragedies are not forgotten, the National Day of Mourning honours and remembers workers who have lost their lives, been seriously injured or who have suffered illness due to workplace hazards. The date, April 28, was chosen in 1984 when the Canadian Labour Congress proclaimed the day to align with the 70th anniversary of the provincial government’s approval of the Workers Compensation Act.
