Heritage Protection

With the assistance of the Heritage Markham Committee Markham uses a number of tools, programs, applications and policies to protect our cultural heritage resources. These include property designation, heritage easements, signage requirements, and the use of Heritage Permits.

Alterations to protected heritage resources such as an individually designated property or any property in a heritage conservation district require the submission of a Minor or Major Heritage Permit application.  Alterations can include modification to the exterior of the building or property, additions to buildings, accessory buildings (garages), new construction or demolition of all or part of a property.

Markham offers a series of educational brochures called “Heritage Matters…in Markham” A variety of heritage topics are covered.

The Province of Ontario also has a series of publications and information brochures related to heritage conservation.
